Hike Mt. Belford
Elevation: 14,197 feet
Elevation gain: 4,500 feet
Distance: 7 miles round trip
Trailhead: Missouri Gulch Trail
Note: This is a clear, solid trail all the way,
but most of the elevation gain is in the last portion. Give yourself
plenty of time to take it leisurely. The terrain is fairly even,
but portions of the trail are steep, so be aware of your footing.
As always, start early and keep an eye out for late snowfields and
electrical storms.
To the Trailhead: Take CR 390 (14 miles north of Buena Vista on
Hwy 24) to the Missouri Gulch Trailhead. There is a sign for the
trailhead about 7 ½ miles down the road. Turn left into the
parking area.
Trail Information: Beginning on the Missouri
Gulch Trail, cross the Clear Creek Bridge. You’ll switchback
up through the forest to the Missouri Gulch. Continue south along
the gulch before turning left and crossing to the east side of the
gulch. On the east side, continue climbing south along the gulch
for about 1/3 mile. There will be the ruins of an old building.
Soon after the ruins, you’ll break treeline and see Belford
ahead of you. A little further on, you’ll come to a trail
junction. Follow the trail to the left.
Now you’ll be heading southeast toward
Belford’s northwest ridge. This is the fun part for masochists.
You’ll switchback up about 2,500 feet of ridge to the summit.
