Interview with Kerry Koch |
 |
|
AVA couldn’t be a success without our valued guests. Each one of you honors us when you step through our doors and allows us to share our love for rivers with you. Thank you for trusting us to provide your adventures!
This year, we’d like you to meet one of our most avid and dedicated guests: Kerry Koch. In the last 5 years, Kerry has been rafting with AVA over 30 times! Throughout the summer, she can be found on our very best advanced rafting trips like The Gauntlet, Clear Creek Advanced, and Gore Canyon. Kerry: we think you might be addicted, and we love it!
Tidbits about Kerry:
When did you start rafting? What was the first trip you did?
I did one trip on Brown's in the mid-80's. I remember the bailing bucket and sitting with one foot in the raft and one on the outside, straddling the tube. But the trip that really started my love for rafting was in 1996 on my 40th birthday. I wanted to do something on my birthday other than go to work and wait for the inevitable black balloons to show up. I talked a friend into coming with me to do a whitewater rafting trip. It was on the Cache La Poudre River. I came out of the boat twice and at the end of the trip when they let us jump off a rock and swim down to an eddy, I did that too. I was hooked! …I gradually stepped up the difficulty and frequency of the trips I did until I became the total rafting junkie that I am today.
Why do you love rafting?
I love rafting because it's exciting. Anything can happen and every trip is different. I love getting smacked in the face with a big wave of water, digging my paddle into it and crashing through. I really enjoy the teamwork aspect of paddle rafting. It's very satisfying when a crew comes together and we get the boat where we need to be.

Go Kerry!

What's your favorite commercial run to do in Colorado?
Right now, I'd have to say Gore Canyon. It's the most challenging and exciting trip I do and I wait with great anticipation each year for August. But I make do with multiple runs of Pine Creek and the Numbers, Royal Gorge, Clear Creek and the Poudre during May, June and July. I also try to do something new each year.
What do you do for a living?
I'm a geophysical analyst in the oil and gas industry. I sit in front of a computer screen all week, so it's great to get out on the weekends and enjoy Colorado's beauty.
Why do you choose to raft with AVA?
Your guides are the BEST!! By that I mean not only their river skills and attention to safety, which is very important because I use AVA for some of the most challenging runs I do. But I also appreciate their personalities. They go out of their way to make me feel welcome. Some are outgoing and funny. Others are more quiet, but they're natural teachers. I've learned much of what I know about river running, safety and swift-water swimming from AVA guides.
What's your dream rafting trip?
Wow, so many places, so little time (and money). I'd like to do the Zambezi (Africa), I'd like to raft in New Zealand and Peru. I went to Chile to raft the Futaleufu and that was the best vacation of my life. I'd love to go back. I'm planning a rafting trip to Costa Rica this winter and I'm really looking forward to it!
Thanks Kerry—for sharing with us and for your support over the years. We’re honored that you continually choose us to take you down the river. We look forward to many more whitewater adventures!

Global Spotlight On: Futaleufu River, Chile: a 10-Day Multi-Sport Adventure! |
|
 |
The Rio Futaleufu, nestled in the heart of the Southern Andes in Northern Patagonia is by far one of the world's greatest whitewater destinations. The "Futa" contains sections of continuous class IV and V whitewater and will satisfy even the most experienced rafter's expectations. (For a personal endorsement, see the interview above with Kerry Koch).

"Rio Futaleufu, Patagonia"
The rapids are laid out perfectly for multiple days of whitewater excitement. The rafting on your trip includes world-class rapids with names like Inferno Canyon, Terminator, and Casa de Piedra (House of Rock). This place is truly a whitewater rafter's paradise.
Its clear turquoise waters pass through a glacially sculpted granite river valley that rivals Yosemite. Close encounters with Andean Condors with wingspans reaching up to nine feet, Crested Caracara, Magellenic Kingfishers and Austral Parakeets are a regular occurrence.

In the evening relax in your luxury riverside accommodations. Enjoy the wood-fired hot tubs and the best South American wines to accompany your gourmet meals. On site yoga classes and massage therapists round out this vacation of a lifetime!

"Whitewater Rafting on the "Futaleufu"
In the Futaleufu river valley you have found frontier culture. You feel as though you've traveled back in time, every house is equipped with wood cook stoves, the primary mode of transportation is still the horse and goods are regularly transported by ox cart. The people of Northern Patagonia are some of the friendliest, most generous people you can encounter. It is truly a great cultural experience!
