5 Tips for your Arkansas River Vacation

By: Evan Dighe

The Arkansas Valley offers some of the best opportunities for hiking, rafting, climbing, camping, and other adventures within the entire state of Colorado. With all these choices, you may be in search of good advice for how to best book your vacation here within the Valley.

1. Stay at a Hot Spring

Hot Spring resorts are a classic way to enjoy summer nights here in Colorado, particularly for those who may not be keen on spending their nights outdoors. Just outside of Buena Vista, you will find Mt Princeton Hot Springs and Cottonwood Hot Springs, each prime destinations for hot spring connoisseurs.

While the summertime may not sound like an appealing time of year for a hot spring stay, the cool air of the high desert makes for a pleasant experience. Hot springs are great places to unwind and relax for those who have been taking full advantage of the Colorado outdoors, whether you have been spending your time hiking, mountain biking, or rafting.

2. Overnight rafting trips

Most people, at some point in their lives, will go rafting on a shorter trip. Of course, it is great to get out on the water any time that you can, but for a truly unique and memorable experience try a one or two night overnight rafting trip on the Arkansas River. Immerse yourself in the whitewater and outdoors experience with riverside campfires, sunrises, sunsets, and some of the best rafting in the USA.

Not only is overnight rafting the experience of a lifetime, but you will also save money on lodging, food etc. Rafting trips are all inclusive and you will have an experienced guide to handle the planning and set up but you get to live like a real outdoors man or women.

3. Guided Fly Fishing Adventures

Colorado has the single highest concentration of gold rated waters in the United States for fly fishing. The Arkansas River itself is one of them. Bring out the whole family and the certified guides over at Ark Anglers will show you the ropes, whether you are an experienced angler or green fisherman who has never held a rod in their life.

We can’t think of a better way to unwind and relax on a vacation in Buena Vista then by spending a morning, afternoon or both wading in the Arkansas River trying to make some catches. With it being such a great spot for fishing, there is  good chance you will make a memorable catch.

4. Go Rock Climbing

If you are looking for a more adventurous activity to occupy yourself on your vacation, look no further than a rock-climbing outfitter. The rock in the Arkansas Valley is legendary for its quality, and routes exist for climbers of all ability levels.

Rock climbing is in vogue, with new films ‘Free Solo’ and ‘The Dawn Wall’ boosting its popularity in recent months. Experience the beauty of the valley and river from atop one of the many cliffs or rock formations within the valley in a unique, interesting way.

5. Deerhammer Distillery and Eddyline Brewery

For those who may be looking to spend a day or night out in town, Buena Vista features two unique destinations for those looking for a locally owned place to satisfy their thirst.

Eddyline Brewery has two locations in town, one which serves food, and one for those just looking to taste some of their fine craft beer. Deerhammer Distillery, which is lesser known, is another great destination for those looking to try their award-winning American whiskey.
