If you’re wondering about other water sports that allow you to explore your local lakes and rivers, consider stand up paddling. Stand up paddling, or SUP, originated in Hawaii, but it has recently spread throughout the country and the world because it is an appropriate sport for all ages does not require any kind of previous experience to enjoy.
What is SUP?
Stand up paddling involves stand on a large, stable, single-person surf board and steering with a long paddle. This fast-growing sport is a fun, easy and inexpensive way to play on the water. SUP can be done on any stretch of water from rivers to oceans with a minimal amount of equipment. With a board, a paddle, and life jacket, you can paddle anything from ocean surf to lakes and rivers. The sport offers an excellent full body work out and is becoming a popular off season activity for skiers, snowboarders, and other athletes. The sport is quickly growing rapidly because you do not need waves and you can do it on any large body of water. It is a sport for the whole family and is easy to learn.
Here are few tips in getting started at this new and exciting sport for the whole family. When first learning this sport, it is best to practice on calm flat water with no waves or obstacles. It is best to start in a kneeling position to gain your balance. When feeling stable, pop onto your feet and stand straight up. To stay balanced when standing upright, keep your feet parallel about hip-width distance apart and centered between the edges of the board. Keep toes forward, knees bent, and your back straight. These tips should help get you started in this new and exciting sport.
When you’re ready for a bigger challenge, take your paddle board to rivers and oceans where you can experience quicker currents and larger waves. Stand up paddle boarding is an exciting no-impact activity that is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a hot new water sport.
