Planning a trip to the high country for the Fourth of July weekend? There is plenty to do and see over the holidays in the mountains. Unfortunately, the dry summers and lack of moisture in the air puts a damper on any personal fireworks display in the state of Colorado. Most of the state is under a high fire danger, which causes most towns to cancel the traditional night time light show. Regardless, there is still a lot going on to keep your family entertained.

Fourth of July WeekendThe Town of Breckenridge has events going on all day long. With everything from a 10k trail run to start the day off to a parade and concerts, you are sure to find something to fill your day. The scenic 10k trail running race offers some of the best views in the county and finishes just in time to catch the parade down Main Street.

The parade is led by eight different waves of mountain bikers racing down Main Street to start the Firecracker 50 Mountain Bike Race. Cheer the riders on as they start a 50 mile journey through the trails surrounding Breckenridge.  The parade will follow with classic cars, floats, and balloons traveling down Main Street in front of the thousands of cheering people.

Following the parade, there is a reading of the Declaration of Independence by George Washington in Blue River Plaza. For the kids, there is a town water fight on Main Street from 12:30 till 2:30 so come join the fun! There will also be live music playing throughout the day with acts such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the National Repertory Orchestra.

If you are not looking for an excitement filled day but would rather get out and enjoy nature, there are hundreds of trails to hike or bike on. From the paved bike path that winds its way through the county, to the most technical and strenuous trails you can imagine, you are sure to find one that matches your ability and desire.
